Joule’s New Birmingham Pub: Introducing Gas Street Vaults
Yes, there’s a new Joule’s pub coming to Birmingham.Gas Street Vaults is Joule’s Brewery’s new Birmingham Brewery Tap, opening at Waterside House, 46 Gas Street, Birmingham B1 2JT in early 2027.
You might recognise the building already. It sits beside the canal at Gas Street Basin and was most recently known as Waterside Tap.
Now we’re getting properly stuck in, transforming it into Gas Street Vaults – a permanent Birmingham home for Joule’s beer, good pub food and a little bit of Shropshire character beside the canal.
Work is underway, so the doors aren’t open just yet. Here’s what we can tell you so far.
What is Gas Street Vaults?
Gas Street Vaults is a new Joule’s Brewery pub at Gas Street Basin in Birmingham city centre.
It will become our Birmingham Brewery Tap: a proper Joule’s pub built around our own beer, warm hospitality, good food and the character of the building it calls home.
We’re an independent brewery based in Market Drayton, Shropshire, and every Joule’s beer starts life at our brewery there before making its way to our Taphouses.
At Gas Street, that Shropshire brewing story meets a very Birmingham building.
Rather than trying to turn it into something shiny and anonymous, the plan is to bring out what makes the place interesting in the first place. The new pub will draw on the building’s canal setting and industrial character, alongside the familiar details that make a Joule’s pub a Joule’s pub.
Is Gas Street Vaults the former Waterside Tap?
Yes. Gas Street Vaults was previously known as Waterside Tap.
Joule’s acquired the Gas Street building in 2025 and initially operated it as Waterside Tap. That gave us time to understand the building before beginning its larger transformation.
And we’re glad we did.
Buildings have a habit of telling you what they need once you’ve spent a bit of time in them. So rather than charging straight in, we used that first chapter to understand how the different spaces worked, how people used the pub and what we wanted its long-term future to look like.
Waterside Tap is now closed while that work takes place.
When the doors reopen, it will be as Gas Street Vaults.

The pub sits at Gas Street Basin, beside Birmingham’s canal network.
It’s close to some fairly useful Birmingham landmarks too, including Brindleyplace, Broad Street and The Mailbox, with Birmingham city centre beyond.
So, if you’ve previously searched for Waterside Tap Birmingham, passed the building from the towpath or spotted the work going on around Gas Street, you’ve found us.
When is Gas Street Vaults opening?
Gas Street Vaults is currently planned to open in early 2027.
We haven’t announced the final opening date yet, and there’s plenty to do before we get there.
The building is currently being restored and refurbished, and we’ll be sharing the work as it progresses rather than disappearing behind the hoardings and popping up again when it’s finished.
That means there’ll be plenty more to come on the bars, rooms, beer, food, old bits we uncover and new bits we put in.
If you want the actual opening date when it’s confirmed, joining the Gas Street Vaults mailing list is the safest bet.
Who owns Gas Street Vaults?
Gas Street Vaults is owned by Joule’s Brewery, an independent brewery based in Market Drayton, Shropshire.
Joule’s acquired the Gas Street property in 2025 and is developing the building as a Joule’s Brewery Tap.
Gas Street Vaults is also part of a growing Joule’s presence in Birmingham. Our Red Lion in the Jewellery Quarter opened in July 2026, while plans are also progressing for the New Inn in Harborne.
We might be from Shropshire, but we’re getting to know Birmingham rather well.
What can you expect at Gas Street Vaults?
First and foremost: Joule’s beer.
Gas Street Vaults is being designed as a brewery pub, with Joule’s cask ales, lagers and seasonal beers taking their rightful place at the centre of things. Our beers are brewed at the Joule’s Brewery in Market Drayton before being delivered to our own pubs.
The development plans include a new central bar on the lower ground floor, with brewery details, reclaimed materials and references to Birmingham’s industrial past worked throughout the building.
There’ll be food too. We’re planning proper British pub dishes, seasonal specials and Sunday roasts, alongside wines from Château Bessan, our vineyard in Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux.
Most importantly, though, we want it to feel like a pub.
Somewhere you can nip in for a pint, stay for lunch, lose considerably more of the afternoon than originally planned, or get a group together around a table.
That bit matters.
Why Gas Street Vaults?
The name is new. The connection to Gas Street isn’t.
Gas Street Vaults takes its identity from the building and its canal-side setting. The site has historic connections with Birmingham’s canal network, and the original vaults beneath the building form part of the story we’ll be exploring as the project develops.
Rather than dropping a Joule’s pub into Birmingham and ignoring what was already here, we want the finished place to belong to both stories: Joule’s Brewery in Shropshire and Gas Street in Birmingham.
There’ll be plenty more from us on that.
