Almost 250 Years of Brewing

Joule's Brewery

Founded in Stone in 1780, Joule’s Brewery has spent more than two centuries brewing beer and bringing people together. Today, we continue that tradition from our brewery in Market Drayton, combining traditional brewing methods with a passion for restoring historic pubs and creating welcoming places to enjoy great beer.

1779

The Beginning

Brewing has been part of Stone's history since the 16th century, but Joule's story began in 1780, when John Joule established the brewery that would become one of the Midlands' most respected names in beer. More than two centuries later, that same passion for brewing still shapes everything we do.

1867

The Red Cross

In 1867, John Joule registered the iconic Red Cross trademark, making it one of the oldest registered beer trademarks in the world. It became a symbol of quality recognised far beyond Staffordshire and remains proudly part of Joule's identity today.

2010

A New Beginning

After brewing in Stone came to an end, Joule's was proudly revived with a new brewery in Market Drayton in 2010. Alongside brewing award-winning beer, we began carefully restoring historic pubs, creating welcoming places where heritage, hospitality and great beer come together.

2027

The Next Chapter

Today, Joule's Brewery operates a growing collection of characterful taphouses across the Midlands. Following the restoration of Red Lion Jewellery Quarter, Gas Street Vaults is the next chapter in our Birmingham journey, bringing brewery-fresh beer, seasonal food and warm hospitality to one of the city's most recognisable canal-side buildings.

BREWED LOCALLY

At Our Brewery

Every Joule's beer is brewed in Market Drayton by our brewing team, never outsourced, always under our own roof.

GIVEN TIME

No Shortcuts

Good beer can't be rushed. We give every brew the time it needs to ferment, mature and develop its full flavour before it ever leaves the brewery.

DELIVERED FRESH

Straight to Our Taphouses

Joule's beer is only served in Joule's pubs, not in the freetrade. Our pubs are never more than 90 minutes from the brewery, meaning every pint is kept local.

SERVED PROPERLY

Brewery Fresh

The journey ends where it should, in a Joule's pub. With short cellar lines and beer drawn straight from the cask, every pint is served as fresh as possible.
